The Statistics group at the Department of Mathematics of the UvA is concerned with mathematical statistics and statistical machine learning. The majority of the ongoing projects concern the theoretical understanding of statistical procedures in high-dimensional models.
This research is motivated by the need for proper fundamental underpinning of procedures that are widely used in practice, without much theoretical justification or understanding of fundamental limitations and possibilities. Among others we study nonparameric Bayes procedures for complex models and the behaviour of adaptive learning algorithms. The group is also involded in applied projects, for instance in climate science.
